While some might tout Manhattan as the ultimate wedding option, a Brooklyn wedding can be just as fabulous and there are tons of venues to suit any couple’s inclinations and budget. As a Brooklyn wedding photographer, I’ve shot weddings throughout the borough and the following are a few of my favorite options.
1. The Brooklyn Winery
If you’re a fan of fine wine and luxury industrial chic, the Brooklyn Winery can be a great option. Exposed brick, a lush plant wall, the ambiance of flickering candles, gourmet seasonal cuisine and some of New York’s finest wines all combine to create a wonderful wedding experience for up to 175 guests. After you’ve tied the knot at the Brooklyn Winery, you’ll even enjoy exclusive discounts on wine and dining for life.
2. The Green Building
Here’s another option for those who wish to surround themselves with rustic charm, this restored 19th-century brass foundry can be a great option with its exposed brick and wooden beams. For a wedding with a cocktail party reception, the Green Building can accommodate up to 250 guests. For a sit-down dinner and dance event, this venue can seat about 160 guests.
3. The William Vale
At first glance, this funky high-rise hotel doesn’t set off romantic wedding vibes but don’t count out this spot by its first impressions. Pop up to the 23rd floor and you’ll find a spectacular ceremony venue with amazing views of New York City. There are few other spots that offer you this combination of privacy and scenery, and that can accommodate up to 240 guests.
Additionally, the hotel includes Vale Park, a private 15,000-square-foot park with beautiful views and space for up to 300 guests. The hotel’s 5,000-square-foot terrace is another popular spot for weddings offering views of Brooklyn’s skyline and space for up to 250 guests.
4. Brooklyn Grange
Searching for something unique and out-of-the-box? Why not hold your wedding at a rooftop farm? After all, it’s not every day that you can get married at a farm in the middle of an urban area.
Brooklyn Grange offers two location options – Sunset Park Farm and the Brooklyn Navy Yard Farm. Sunset Park Farm can accommodate 50 to 150 guests and is open all year for weddings and special events. The Navy Yard Farm can accommodate 25 to 100 guests from June to mid-October, as well as small weddings (25 guests or fewer) from May through October.
5. Brooklyn Botanic Garden
For nature lovers, this is an idyllic setting. The gardens offer a lush, green backdrop for your ceremony, especially stunning during cherry blossom season. For your reception, you can rent either the Atrium or the Palm House (I love the Palm House!) and ceremonies can be held in one of several locations throughout the property. The Palm House can accommodate up to 250 guests, while the Atrium can accommodate up to 125 guests.
6. The Prospect Park Boathouse
For a serene and picturesque wedding, the historic Boathouse on the Lullwater of the Lake in Prospect Park is a fantastic choice. This option boasts both outdoor and indoor spaces for your ceremony and reception and tons of spots for your wedding photos.
In addition to the boathouse, weddings also can be staged at the Picnic House, which offers sweeping views of the Long Meadow. The Picnic House can accommodate 175 guests for a seated dinner with dancing. The Boathouse can accommodate 150 guests for a dinner with dancing.
7. Brooklyn Bridge Park
This iconic park offers three locations for wedding ceremonies – Main Street Pebble Beach, Pier 1 Granite Prospect and the Empire Fulton Ferry Boardwalk. All of them offer stunning backdrops for your wedding day and, of course, your wedding photography.
While these locations can accommodate up to 100 guests, chairs, decorations or any kind of staging is not allowed and there are other restrictions as well. Additionally, you will need to acquire a permit for any ceremony of 20 or more guests, and permits are not issued on holidays or weekends. So, while this park is a popular wedding site, it’s not perfect for every couple. Still, this park can be an amazing option for engagement photography or proposal photography. (Side Note: If you need a proposal photographer, I have captured many of these wonderful events)
Each of these venues offers a different atmosphere, from urban chic to natural elegance, ensuring that there's something to suit every couple's style and preference in Brooklyn. Keep in mind that these options are just the tip of the iceberg, as Brooklyn offers so many possibilities. The Box House Hotel, 501 Union and the Liberty Warehouse are a few other options that spring to mind, but the city is teaming with idyllic locations for your Brooklyn wedding ceremony and reception.
